Centre Implements “Anna-Chakra” Supply Chain Tool in 30 States to Optimize PDS Efficiency
In a major step toward modernizing India’s food supply system, the Government of India has implemented the “Anna-Chakra” Supply Chain Optimisation Tool in 30 out of 31 targeted States and Union Territories (UTs). This digital initiative aims to streamline the Public Distribution System (PDS) using technology-driven logistics, resulting in an estimated annual saving of ₹250 crore and reduced environmental impact.
“Anna-Chakra” is a route optimization and logistics management tool developed for enhancing the efficiency of PDS logistics and grain movement. It applies data-driven algorithms to minimize transit costs, reduce delivery times, and ensure systematic food distribution from central warehouses to fair price shops.
By replacing traditional manual planning with automated route optimization, the tool helps prevent wastage, cuts fuel use, and improves real-time decision-making in food grain transportation.
As of August 2025, the tool has been implemented in the following 30 States/UTs,
Punjab, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Mizoram, Bihar, Sikkim, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Nagaland, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Assam, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Arunachal Pradesh, Ladakh, Tripura, Kerala, Karnataka, Haryana, Odisha.
The only State where implementation is still pending is Manipur.
The tool is expected to save ₹250 crore annually through reduced transportation costs. This reflects efficient fuel usage, optimized truck loads, and minimized redundant routes.
Reduced fuel consumption also contributes to lower CO2 emissions, supporting India’s climate change commitments and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
By using digital dashboards and predictive analytics, authorities can track stock movement, anticipate delays, and prevent leakages or diversions in the food supply chain.
Optimized scheduling ensures that ration reaches the beneficiaries faster, especially in remote and hard-to-reach areas.
India’s PDS covers over 800 million people, making it one of the largest food security networks in the world. Efficient distribution of grains is crucial for the system to function effectively.
