India, a land of diverse cultures, unique traditions, and rich history, is home to 28 states and 8 union territories, each with its own distinct characteristics. Among these regions, certain cities are renowned for specific products. One such city is known as the “City of Cloves.” Let’s explore which city holds this unique title and why.
Located in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, Kanyakumari is famously known as the “City of Cloves.” This coastal town is not only a popular tourist destination due to its scenic beauty and cultural significance but also a major hub for clove production in India.
Kanyakumari earns its title due to its significant contribution to India’s clove production. The city alone accounts for approximately 65% of the country’s clove output. Moreover, Tamil Nadu, the state in which Kanyakumari is located, produces over 80% of India’s cloves. The high yield and quality of cloves produced here have led to them being known specifically as “Kanyakumari Cloves.”
Clove production is a vital part of Kanyakumari’s economy. The climatic conditions and soil quality in the region are ideal for clove cultivation, making it the leading producer of this valuable spice. The cloves grown in Kanyakumari are supplied across various parts of India, contributing significantly to the spice market.
While Kanyakumari leads in clove production, other states also contribute to the cultivation of this spice. Karnataka and Kerala are notable producers, with Karnataka accounting for around 10% and Kerala for over 5% of India’s clove production. These states also benefit from favorable growing conditions, but their production volumes are significantly lower compared to Tamil Nadu.
