Classical Singer Prabha Atre Passes Away at 91
The Indian classical music fraternity mourns the loss of Dr. Prabha Atre, a revered classical vocalist and a luminary of the Kirana Gharana, who passed away in Pune at the age of 91. Known for her multifaceted contributions to the world of music, Dr. Atre’s passing brings an end to a glorious chapter in the history of Indian classical music.
Born on September 13, 1932, Prabha Atre was not just a classical vocalist but also an academician, researcher, composer, and author. Her educational background was as diverse as her musical career; she held a Bachelor of Science degree, an LL.B., and a doctorate in music. Her doctoral thesis was titled ‘Sargam,’ reflecting her deep engagement with music theory and practice.
Representing the Kirana Gharana, Dr. Atre’s style was characterized by a refined approach covering various forms like khayal, thumri, ghazal, bhajan, and tarana. She traveled globally, sharing her knowledge and lecturing on music, thus becoming an ambassador of Indian classical music on the world stage.
Dr. Atre’s contributions were recognized through several prestigious awards. She was a recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1991), Padma Shri (1990), Padma Bhushan (2002), and the Padma Vibhushan (2022), India’s second-highest civilian honor.
Dr. Atre passed away following a cardiac arrest. Her legacy transcends her music; she was a symbol of the changing face of Indian classical music, challenging conventions and introducing new perspectives. Her death is not just a loss to the Indian music industry but to the global community that revered her art.
