Her educational background was as diverse as her musical career; she held a Bachelor of Science degree, an LL.B., and a doctorate in music. Her doctoral thesis was titled ‘Sargam,’ reflecting her deep engagement with music theory and practice.
Representing the Kirana Gharana, Dr. Atre’s style was characterized by a refined approach covering various forms like khayal, thumri, ghazal, bhajan, and tarana. She traveled globally, sharing her knowledge and lecturing on music, thus becoming an ambassador of Indian classical music on the world stage.
Dr. Atre’s contributions were recognized through several prestigious awards. She was a recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1991), Padma Shri (1990), Padma Bhushan (2002), and the Padma Vibhushan (2022), India’s second-highest civilian honor.
