Cleanest Cities in India by Air Quality Index (2025)
Air pollution is one of India’s most pressing environmental problems, directly affecting millions. Many Indian cities, particularly in the northern plains, often record “Very Poor” or “Severe” Air Quality Index (AQI) levels. However, some regions — especially in the southern and northeastern states — have managed to keep their air relatively clean.
The Air Quality Index (AQI) measures the concentration of major pollutants like PM2.5, PM10, NO₂, and CO. Lower AQI values (0–50) indicate “Good” air quality, while higher numbers represent more pollution and greater health risks.
| Rank | City | AQI (US) | Air Quality Category |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pune | 51 | Satisfactory |
| 2 | Mumbai | 60 | Satisfactory |
| 3 | Nashik | 63 | Satisfactory |
| 4 | Ahmedabad | 64 | Satisfactory |
| 5 | Bhopal | 64 | Satisfactory |
| 6 | Pimpri Chinchwad | 66 | Satisfactory |
| 7 | Bhilai | 67 | Satisfactory |
| 8 | Nagpur | 71 | Moderate |
| 9 | Gandhinagar | 74 | Moderate |
| 10 | Indore | 76 | Moderate |
Pune tops the list with an AQI of 51, making it the cleanest metropolitan city in India. Nestled near the Western Ghats, Pune benefits from good wind circulation, which disperses pollutants effectively. Its growing focus on green mobility and sustainable transport further helps maintain satisfactory air quality.
Mumbai ranks second with an AQI of 60. Despite being one of the most densely populated cities in the world, sea breezes from the Arabian Sea help flush out pollutants. Continuous monitoring and emission controls by BMC and MPCB have also played a role in maintaining cleaner air.
Nashik, known for its vineyards and temples, records an AQI of 63, showing its dedication to maintaining air cleanliness. Lower industrial density and active municipal initiatives keep the air relatively healthy, often close to the “Good” category.
With an AQI of 64, Ahmedabad stands out among industrial centers. The city’s efforts toward industrial pollution control, CNG use, and emission standards contribute to maintaining a satisfactory AQI.
Bhopal’s numerous lakes and greenery help purify its air. With an AQI of 64, the city enjoys balanced urban growth and environmental management, making it one of the cleaner capital cities in India.
This twin city near Pune records an AQI of 66, impressive for an industrial hub. Strict pollution norms and emission controls have made it a model for industrial air management in India.
Bhilai’s AQI of 67 reflects commendable air quality given its heavy industries. The modernization of steel plants and use of clean technologies has reduced pollutant output substantially.
