Darjeeling’s Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park Launches DNA Preservation Project
The Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park in Darjeeling has become India’s first zoo to preserve DNA samples of wildlife found in snowy regions. The project, launched in collaboration with the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad, aims to aid conservation efforts for endangered species. Chief Wildlife Warden Debal Roy confirmed that 60 DNA samples from indigenous animals, including red pandas and snow leopards, have already been collected. This cryogenic conservation initiative will support future research and genetic studies, ensuring that even if certain species face extinction, their genetic material remains preserved.
