Devastating Flash Flood in Uttarkashi’s Dharali Village after Cloudburst

On Tuesday, a devastating flash flood triggered by a cloudburst in the upper catchment area of the Kheer Ganga river wreaked havoc in Dharali village of Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand. The village, an important stop for pilgrims travelling to Gangotri Dham, witnessed large-scale destruction as torrential waters swept through homes, shops, and roads, leaving behind debris, mud, and despair.

Cause of the Flash Flood

According to initial reports, the cloudburst occurred in the upper reaches of the Kheer Ganga river, significantly raising the water level of Kheer Gadh in the Harsil area. The sudden surge in water flow cascaded down to Dharali, resulting in catastrophic flooding and destruction.

Scale of Destruction

The powerful floodwaters tore through Dharali village, damaging critical infrastructure.

  • Homes, shops, and roads have been washed away.
  • Hotels and homestays in the area have suffered complete destruction.
  • Locals fear that 10 to 12 labourers might be trapped under debris from collapsed buildings.

Dramatic visuals from the scene show the uncontrollable force of nature, as the floodwaters ravaged the settlement and its surroundings.

Loss to Livelihoods

In addition to the destruction in Dharali:

In the Banala Patti area of Barkot tehsil, the overflowing Kud Gadhera stream swept away 18 goats, causing losses to local herders. This incident underscores how such natural disasters not only cause human casualties but also affect the fragile rural economy in Himalayan regions.

Rescue and Relief Operations

Immediately after the disaster:

  • State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams rushed to the site.
  • Army units joined rescue and evacuation operations.
  • Local authorities from Harsil and Bhatwari mobilised resources to help those stranded.

Efforts are ongoing to locate and rescue the labourers feared trapped under the debris. The rescue teams are battling tough terrain, swift currents, and continuous rainfall.

Weather Warnings and Risk of Further Floods

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of continued heavy rainfall across Uttarakhand until August 10. Particularly in hilly regions, intense downpours are expected, which could lead to further landslides, flash floods, and road blockages. Authorities have urged residents and pilgrims to avoid unnecessary travel in high-risk zones.

Challenges Ahead

  • The remote location of Dharali makes access difficult for heavy rescue equipment.
  • Continuous rain is hampering relief work and increasing the risk of secondary disasters.
  • Communication lines in some affected areas have been disrupted, making coordination harder.
