Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam: Birth Anniversary

Avul Pakir Jainuladbeen Abdul Kalam born on 15th October 1931 was an Indian aerospace scientist and the 11th president of India. He served as the President of India from 2002 to 2007. He was known as the Missile Man of India for his works and development of ballistic missiles and launch vehicle technology.

He has spent more than four decades serving as a scientist and science administrator at Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). He was constantly involved in the civil space program of India and military missile development. He was also the recipient of several prestigious awards which includes Bharat Ratna.

Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam: Early Life

APJ Abdul Kalam also known as People’s President was born on 15th October 1931 in a Tamil Muslim family in Rameswaram on Pamban Island, then in the Presidency of Madras and now in Tamil Nadu. His father Jainuladbeen Marakayar was a boat owner and imam of a local mosque and his mother was a housewife. Abdul Kalam was the youngest of four brothers and one sister in his family. Abdul Kalam has been an average student in his school years but was considered hardworking and consistent. He completed his schooling at Schwartz Higher Secondary School, he went to Saint Joseph’s College in Tiruchirapalli. He graduated in physics in 1954. In 1955, he moved to Madras to study further Aerospace Engineering at the Madras Institute of Technology.

  1. In the first year of the establishment of ISRO in 1969, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam was chosen to be the project director.
  2. He led the project to build India’s first Indigenous satellite launch vehicle (SLV). In 1980, SLV-III successfully launched the satellite Rohini into orbit.
  3. Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam was appointed as the CEO of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP). The program was under the guidance of the Ministry of Defence.
  4. He also played an important role in the development of nuclear power in India behind the Pokhran II nuclear test.
  5. APJ Abdul Kalam has also contributed to the field of medicine in India. He and his team developed lightweight prosthetics from space-age material to enable physically challenged children to be able to walk.
  6. He has collaborated with cardiologist B. Soma Raju to build Indigenous coronary stents. These stents led to over 50% price-cut compared to imported stents.
  7. He has developed the concept of an indigenous ‘rugged tablet’ computer with B. Soma Raju for the healthcare professionals at primary health centers in rural regions.
  8. Dr. Kalam launched a mass movement centered around anti-corruption in 2011 which covered themes such as social, environmental, and ethical issues.
  9. He is known as the People’s President and has been inclined towards the welfare of the younger generation.
  10. Dr. Kalam as a President set a crucial political precedent in the country. He was the first President of India who sends back a bill to parliament for reconsideration.
