Anousheh Ansari is an influential Iranian-American engineer, entrepreneur, and space traveler. Born on September 12, 1966, in Mashhad, Iran, she became the first Iranian to travel to space on September 18, 2006. As a co-founder of Prodea Systems and former CEO of Telecom Technologies, she has significantly impacted the tech industry. Her memoir, My Dream of Stars, reflects her journey and aspirations.
Anousheh Raissyan grew up in Tehran, where she developed a fascination with space at a young age. After her parents divorced when she was six, she faced the challenges of growing up during the Iranian Revolution and the Iran-Iraq War. In 1984, she immigrated to the United States, where she completed her education, earning a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and a Master’s degree in computer science.
After completing her education, Ansari worked at MCI, where she met her husband, Hamid Ansari. Together, they co-founded Telecom Technologies in 1993, focusing on Softswitch technology for telecom service providers. The company thrived and was acquired by Sonus Networks in 2001. In 2006, she established Prodea Systems, a technology management company.
Anousheh Ansari’s journey to space began when she trained as a backup for another astronaut. When the primary astronaut was disqualified, she took his place on the Soyuz TMA-9 mission. On September 18, 2006, she launched into space, becoming the fourth self-funded space tourist and the first self-funded woman to visit the International Space Station (ISS). During her nine-day stay, she conducted various scientific experiments and became the first person to publish a blog from space.
Ansari is a prominent advocate for the commercialization of space travel. She has been actively involved with the X PRIZE Foundation and made significant contributions to promote private space exploration. Her work encourages young people, especially women and girls, to pursue careers in science and technology.
While in space, Ansari faced controversy regarding the display of the Iranian flag. Although she intended to honor both the U.S. and Iran, she was advised against displaying the Iranian flag due to political sensitivities. Instead, she wore the Iranian flag’s colors on her spacesuit and kept the flag on her flight patch, emphasizing her desire to foster global unity.
Ansari has received numerous awards throughout her career, including the George Mason University Entrepreneurial Excellence Award and the National Center for Women & Information Technology’s Innovator Award. She was honored with an Ellis Island Medal of Honor in 2010 and the Space Pioneer Award from the National Space Society in 2015.
Anousheh Ansari has participated in various public speaking engagements, including the Honeywell Leadership Academy and the Academy Awards, where she accepted an award on behalf of Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi. She continues to inspire future generations through her work in technology and space exploration.
