G20 Summit Key Points

  • During the opening session of the two-day G20 Summit, the African Union (AU) was granted permanent membership in the Group of 20, which represents the world’s largest economies. The G20 also adopted the New Delhi Leaders Summit Declaration, emphasizing the importance of peace in today’s world. The declaration called on all nations to uphold international law principles such as territorial integrity and sovereignty, advocating for peaceful conflict resolution through diplomacy and dialogue.
  • At the G20 Summit, several countries including India, the US, UAE, Saudi Arabia, France, Germany, Italy, and the European Union signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor. President Biden referred to it as a “game-changing” regional investment. This economic corridor, featuring rail and shipping links, aims to boost trade between India, the Middle East, and Europe, effectively creating a modern-day Spice Route that connects regions responsible for a significant portion of the global economy.
  • Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced at the G20 Leaders Summit in New Delhi that Britain is committing $2 billion to the Green Climate Fund (GCF) to assist developing countries in addressing climate change challenges. The Green Climate Fund (GCF) is the world’s largest fund of its kind, established under United Nations climate change negotiations to provide financial support to less affluent nations in achieving their carbon emissions reduction goals, developing cleaner energy sources, and adapting to a changing climate.
  • Russia welcomed the G20 consensus declaration, which avoided direct criticism of Moscow for its involvement in the Ukraine conflict, describing it as a “balanced” outcome. Svetlana Lukash, the Russian G20 sherpa or government negotiator, expressed this sentiment, noting that the declaration was carefully composed. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 has resulted in significant casualties, the displacement of millions, and economic disruptions worldwide. Moscow maintains that it is conducting a “special military operation” in Ukraine and denies any allegations of atrocities.
