The Indian government is on a mission to achieve comprehensive coverage for the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) by January 26, a colossal undertaking that involves incorporating 270 million additional individuals into its flagship health scheme. New directives have been issued to central ministries and agencies overseeing welfare schemes, emphasizing the need for rapid “saturation” of beneficiaries, ensuring the inclusion of all intended recipients.
Presently, over 280 million people possess an Ayushman card, granting access to quality healthcare for those living below the poverty line. However, the government aims to extend coverage to a minimum of 550 million people, leaving a substantial gap of 270 million individuals to be addressed within a little over a month.
Uttar Pradesh leads with 46 million Ayushman cards, followed by Madhya Pradesh (37 million), Gujarat (20 million), Chhattisgarh (20 million), and Maharashtra (19 million). The proliferation of Ayushman cards has resulted in a noteworthy surge in hospitalizations, with the National Statistical Office reporting an approaching 3.16 percent hospitalization rate per 100,000 beneficiaries this fiscal year, surpassing the national average of 2.9 percent.
In October, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) disclosed that the Ayushman Bharat scheme has saved an impressive Rs 1 trillion in treatment costs over its five-year existence. The scheme has facilitated more than Rs 5.7 crore worth of cashless treatments, generating 254 million beneficiary cards. Operating as the world’s largest public health protection scheme, AB-PMJAY provides Rs 500,000 health coverage per beneficiary family annually to around 600 million beneficiaries identified based on specific deprivation and occupational criteria.
