Government Notifies New Citizenship Rules, Streamlines OCI and Application Processes

The Government of India has notified the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2026 and introduced the important changes related to the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders and citizenship procedures. This amendments were issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and it have modify the existing Citizenship Rules, 2009 to make the citizenship related process more streamlined, digital and efficient.

Key Changes in OCI and Citizenship Rules

The new rules brings the several updates which are aims to simplifying procedures and improving compliance.

One major clarification is that a minor child cannot hold the both an Indian passport and also a foreign passport simultaneously and reinforcing the India’s citizenship norms.

Another important change is the shift towards the complete digitalization. All the applications related to OCI registration and renunciation will now to be submitted online through the official portal and with this it will eliminating the need for manual paperwork.

Introduction of e-OCI and Digital Processes

The government of India has introduced the concept of electronic OCI (e-OCI).

Under this system the individuals registering as the OCI cardholders may be issued either a physical OCI card or a digital registration.

Additionally the earlier requirement to submitting documents in duplicate has been removed ad making the application process more user-friendly and efficient.

New Rules for OCI Renunciation

Under the new revised provisions those individuals who are wish to renounce their OCI status have to must submit a declaration online and surrender their original OCI card to the nearest Indian Mission, Post or Foreigners Regional Registration Officer (FRRO).

This will ensures the proper documentation and it prevents misuse of OCI status.

Biometric Data and Fast Track Immigration

Also the new requirement has been introduced for the OCI applicants to sign a consent form for participation for the Fast Track Immigration Program.

By opting in the applicants have to agree to the collection of their biometric data which will help the faster and more secure immigration processing at airports and entry points.
