Happy Krishna Janmashtami 2025: Celebration, History, and Greetings

Krishna Janmashtami 2025, the festival celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, is being observed on Saturday, August 16, 2025. Falling on the eighth day (Ashtami) of Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada, this year marks the 5252nd birth anniversary of Lord Krishna. Known by many names—Janmashtami, Krishnashtami, Gokulashtami, Ashtami Rohini, Srikrishna Jayanti, and Sree Jayanthi—the festival unites millions of devotees across India and the world in prayer, fasting, music, and joy.

History and Significance of Janmashtami

The Birth of Krishna

According to Hindu mythology,

  • Devaki and Vasudeva were imprisoned by Devaki’s brother, King Kansa, after a prophecy declared that her eighth son would bring about his downfall.
  • Kansa killed six of Devaki’s children and awaited the eighth.
  • When Krishna was born at midnight in Mathura’s prison cell, Vasudeva carried him across the Yamuna River in a basket and left him in the care of Yashoda and Nanda in Vrindavan.
  • Krishna grew up in Vrindavan, known for his childhood leelas (divine plays) like stealing butter, playing the flute, and spreading love. Eventually, he killed Kansa, fulfilling the prophecy.

Why Krishna’s Birth is Celebrated

  • Krishna symbolizes the victory of good over evil and the restoration of dharma (righteousness).
  • His teachings in the Bhagavad Gita emphasize devotion, selfless service, and righteous living.
  • Janmashtami celebrates not only his birth but also his divine acts, wisdom, and eternal message of love and faith.

How Janmashtami is Celebrated

Traditions and Rituals

  • Devotees observe fasts until midnight, the time of Krishna’s birth.
  • Homes and temples are decorated with flowers, lights, and rangoli.
  • Krishna idols are adorned in new clothes, ornaments, and butter pots (makhan).
  • Bhajans, kirtans, and Rasleela plays reenacting Krishna’s life are performed.
  • At midnight, conch shells are blown, and devotees offer prayers, celebrating Krishna’s arrival.

Dahi Handi Celebrations

  • In states like Maharashtra, Janmashtami is celebrated with Dahi Handi, where groups form human pyramids to break a pot of curd tied high, symbolizing Krishna’s love for butter.
