ICC Bans UK Cricketer Rizwan Javed For Over 17 Years For Match-Fixing

UK-based club cricketer Rizwan Javed has been handed a severe ban from all cricketing activities for a period of 17 ½ years. This decision comes in the wake of his involvement in several breaches of the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) Anti-Corruption Code for Participants. The ramifications of his actions highlight the stringent measures taken to uphold the integrity of the sport.

Charges and Findings

Rizwan Javed was one among eight individuals charged by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on behalf of the ECB for their involvement in corruption attempts during the 2021 Abu Dhabi T10 Cricket League. Despite being charged, Rizwan failed to respond, leading to a presumption of guilt. The Chair of the ICC Code of Conduct Committee, Michael J Beloff KC, acting as the ECB’s Disciplinary Panel, rendered the decision based on this non-response.

Rizwan was found guilty on five different breaches, including

Article 2.1.1: Involvement in attempts to fix matches or aspects of matches in the Abu Dhabi T10 2021 (on three separate occasions).
Article 2.1.3: Offering rewards to other participants in exchange for engaging in corrupt conduct.
Article 2.1.4: Soliciting, inducing, or facilitating other participants to breach the Anti-Corruption Code (on three separate occasions).
Article 2.4.4: Failure to disclose full details of any approaches or invitations received to engage in corrupt conduct.
Article 2.4.6: Failure or refusal, without compelling justification, to cooperate with any investigation into possible corrupt conduct.

Sanction and Backdating

The ban imposed on Rizwan Javed is backdated to 19 September 2023, the date of his provisional suspension. This reflects the seriousness of the violations and aims to ensure accountability for his actions.

Statement from ICC General Manager Integrity

Alex Marshall, the ICC General Manager Integrity, emphasized the severity of Rizwan Javed’s actions and the need for stringent measures to combat corruption in cricket. Marshall stated that the lengthy ban serves as a warning to potential corrupters and underscores the commitment to preserving the integrity of the sport. He highlighted the importance of upholding the rules in place to safeguard cricket from unethical influences.

Combatting Corruption in Cricket

Rizwan Javed’s case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against corruption in cricket. The decisive action taken by the authorities underscores the commitment to maintaining the sport’s integrity at all levels. As cricket continues to evolve, stringent measures and robust enforcement are essential to uphold the spirit of fair play and sportsmanship.
