Location of Mount Harriet National Park

Mount Harriet National Park, now officially called Mount Manipur National Park, is located in the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India. It is near Port Blair, the capital city of the islands and is around 20 km away from it.

When was the Park Established?

The park was first a reserve forest and later became a national park in 1979. It covers about 4.62 square kilometers, and plans are in place to increase its area by adding nearby forests and coastal ecosystems.

Why is it Famous?

Mount Harriet (Mount Manipur) is the third-highest peak in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, standing at 383 meters. It is well known for:

Who was Mount Harriet Named After?

The park was originally named after Harriet C. Tyler, the wife of a British officer, Robert Tyler, who worked in the Andamans during the British rule. She was known for her historical writings and photographs during the Revolt of 1857.

There are over 130 plant species, including native trees like Dipterocarpus, Hopea and Moringa. Some trees have long vines hanging from them, which makes the trekking experience very exciting and unique.

  • Saltwater crocodiles
  • Turtles and robber crabs
