India Achieves Record Solar & Wind Generation in Early 2025

In a landmark development for India’s energy transition, the country generated record levels of solar and wind power in the first half of 2025, as per a report by the energy think‑tank Ember. This surge not only increased the share of clean energy but also helped reduce power sector emissions by 24 million tonnes compared to the same period in 2024. This performance signals India’s growing strength in renewable power, even as electricity demand growth softened due to milder weather and lower cooling requirements.

Key Highlights & Statistics

Solar Power Surge

  • Solar output increased by 17 TWh, a 25% jump over H1 2024.
  • Solar’s share in India’s total electricity generation rose to 9.2 % (from 7.4 %) in H1 2024.

Wind Power Growth

  • Wind power generation rose by 11 TWh, amounting to 29% growth year-on-year.
  • Wind’s share in the power mix climbed to 5.1 %, up from 4 %.

Emissions & Fossil Decline

  • Clean energy gains contributed to a reduction of about 24 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions in the power sector.
  • Coal power generation declined significantly in the same period.

Factors Behind the Surge

Slower Demand Growth

  • Electricity demand in H1 2025 grew modestly, in part due to milder summer conditions and reduced dependency on cooling loads.
  • This made it easier for renewables to capture a larger share.

Policy & Infrastructure Momentum

  • India’s continued focus on renewable energy development, grid integration, and power sector reforms have strengthened the capacity to absorb intermittent sources.
  • Strategic investments in transmission, storage, and regulatory support have played a role.

Technology & Cost Trends

  • Declining costs of solar PV, improvements in wind turbine efficiency, and better project management have made renewable deployments more viable at scale.

Important Facts

  • Solar growth: 17 TWh (≈ +25 %)
  • Wind growth: 11 TWh (≈ +29 %)
  • Shares: Solar 9.2 %, Wind 5.1 %
  • Emissions cut: 24 million tonnes in power sector
  • Underlying driver: demand growth slowdown, cleaner generation push
