India Clinched 5 Medals On Day One Of Asian Games At Hangzhou In China
India, known for its strong sporting culture, had a promising start on the first official day of the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. India wrapped up the first official day of the Asian Games 2023 with five medals – three silver and two bronze.
The women’s 10m air rifle team, comprising Ashi Chouksey, Mehuli Ghosh, and Ramita, set the tone for India by clinching the country’s first medal at the Asian Games 2023. They secured a silver medal in the team event. Ramita, displaying exceptional skill, went on to win an individual bronze in the same category.
India’s impressive medal streak in rowing continued as Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh, competing in the men’s lightweight double sculls, secured a silver medal. Additionally, the men’s eight teams also performed remarkably and secured a silver medal, further contributing to India’s success. Additionally, the men’s pair represented by Babu Lal Yadav and Lekh Ram secured a bronze, further adding to India’s medal tally in this discipline.
In a historic moment for Indian cricket, the women’s cricket team advanced to the final, guaranteeing at least a silver medal on their Asian Games debut. On the other hand, the Indian men’s hockey team showcased its dominance by defeating Uzbekistan with an impressive 16-0 victory in their opening match.
The Sunil Chhetri-led Indian men’s football team faced a tense encounter with Myanmar, resulting in a 1-1 draw. Despite the women’s team bowing out, the men’s team’s performance secured their place in the Round of 16, providing hope for future matches.
Indian boxers made their presence felt on the Asian Games stage. Two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen made a stunning debut, defeating two-time Asian champion Nguyen Thi Tam of Vietnam in the women’s 50kg event. Preeti Pawar joined the winning streak by advancing to the women’s 54kg quarter-finals after her victory over Jordan’s Silina Alhasanat.

Charanjot Singh, representing India in FC Online, faced disappointment as he lost 2-0 for the second time to Chinese player Jiacheng Liu, leading to his exit from the event. Indian swimmers, including Maana Patel, Dhinidhi Desinghu, Janhvi Choudhary, and Shivangi Sarma, displayed their prowess by breaking the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay national record.
Despite a valiant effort, the Indian swimming team finished seventh in the final. The Indian team faced tough competition, with China securing the gold, and Japan and Hong Kong China winning the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
In the table tennis men’s team quarter-final, India suffered a 3-0 defeat against the Republic of Korea, marking a challenging day for Indian paddlers. However, they still have opportunities in the men’s singles and doubles events.
