India Introduces First Barrier-Free Tolling System on Major Highway in Gujarat
India has launched the first Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system in Gujarat. This system was implemented by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and it went live at the Chorayasi Toll Plaza on the Surat–Bharuch stretch of NH-48. On the opening day around 41,500 vehicles passed through seamlessly without stopping and it marks the important shift towards the faster, smarter and technology driven toll collection.
This newly introduced Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system will eliminate the need for physical toll booths. The vehicles can now pass through toll points without any stopping and it ensures the uninterrupted movement.
This system represents the major upgrade from traditional toll plazas where the long queues and delays were common.
By using MLFF system tolling becomes fully automated and contactless and will improve the overall travel experience for commuters.
This pilot project went live on NH-48 in Gujarat ad it is expected to pave the way for nationwide adoption of this advanced tolling mechanism.
The MLFF system uses the combination of advanced technologies to ensure smooth and accurate toll collection.
Key Technologies Used
The Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) which captures vehicle number plates for the identification.
And the FASTag System which enables electronic toll payment directly from the vehicles linked accounts.
Combining these technologies will allow seamless toll deduction without requiring vehicles to slow down or stop at toll plazas.
This will ensures high efficiency, accuracy and minimal human intervention.
This new MLFF system is expected to bring the several benefits to both commuters and the environment.
