India Launches First National Toll-Free Anti-Narcotics Helpline
India is set to launch its first national toll-free anti-narcotics helpline, ‘1933’, alongside an email service under the name MANAS (Madak Padarth Nisedh Asuchna Kendra). Scheduled for launch by Union Home Minister Amit Shah during the seventh Narco-Coordination Centre meeting on July 18, the helpline aims to provide a user-friendly platform for citizens to report drug-related crimes and seek assistance 24×7.
MANAS will address various drug-related issues including trafficking, illegal sale, storage, manufacturing, and cultivation of narcotics. It guarantees confidentiality and promises prompt action under the NDPS Act.
Citizens can report crimes via phone (1933), email (info.ncbmanas@gov.in), or the website ncbmanas.gov.in. The initiative aims to streamline reporting, replacing an earlier less-accessible system.
Under PM Modi’s leadership, the government is committed to a ‘zero-tolerance policy’ against drug trafficking. The Ministry of Home Affairs plans to achieve a drug-free India by 2047 through institutional strengthening, coordinated efforts among agencies, and extensive public awareness campaigns.
Efforts include establishing NCB zonal offices, launching awareness campaigns like Nasha Mukt Bharat, and enhancing forensic capabilities and judicial frameworks to combat drug-related crimes effectively.
Established in 2016, the NCORD mechanism facilitates coordination between states and the central government through a structured four-tier system.
Upcoming measures include the formation of state-level anti-narcotics task forces, the launch of dedicated portals for offenders, and the creation of specialized courts for expedited drug-related cases.
