India to Host 89th IEC General Meeting in 2025

India is set to host the 89th General Meeting (GM) of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) from 15 to 19 September 2025 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. Organised by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the summit will bring together over 2,000 global experts from more than 100 countries to deliberate on international electrotechnical standards that will drive a sustainable, all-electric, and connected future. This marks the fourth time India is hosting the IEC General Meeting, previously held in 1960, 1997, and 2013.

Inauguration and Key Highlights

The event will be formally inaugurated by Shri Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister of Consumer Affairs and New & Renewable Energy. Shri Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, will open the IEC GM Exhibition at Bharat Mandapam, which is expected to be the largest electrotechnical showcase in the country.

IEC GM Exhibition

Running from 16 to 19 September, the exhibition will feature,

  • 75 exhibitors, including major industries, associations, and start-ups
  • Displays on smart lighting, electric mobility, electronics, and IT manufacturing
  • Entry is free with prior registration through gm2025.iec.ch
  • Open to the public from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM via Gate No. 10 and Gate No. 4
  • Over 2,000 students from educational institutions expected to visit

India’s Leadership in Standardisation

India has been designated the Global Secretariat for Standardisation in Low Voltage Direct Current (LVDC), a transformative area critical for developing clean and pollution-free energy solutions. This recognition highlights India’s growing role in shaping future-ready, sustainable electrotechnical standards.

Mr. Vimal Mahendru, Vice President of IEC, highlighted that IEC’s membership includes about 170 countries covering 99% of the global population, and their standards influence nearly 20% of global trade by value. India’s leadership in LVDC marks a significant step in the global clean energy transition.

Workshops and Technical Committees

The event will feature over 150 Technical and Management Committee meetings, along with specialised workshops on emerging themes,

  • 15 September: Fostering a Sustainable World
  • 16 September: Artificial Intelligence: Shaping the Future with Innovation
  • 17 September: Shaping the Future of E-Mobility
  • 18 September: Building a More Inclusive World through Standards and Enabling an All-Electric and Connected Society

These sessions aim to build consensus on the next generation of electrotechnical standards and their role in sustainable innovation.

Youth Engagement and Innovation Showcase

  • Through the IEC Young Professionals Programme, 93 participants from across the globe will attend boot camps, workshops, and industry visits, fostering the next generation of global technology leaders.
  • BIS is also working to integrate standardisation into education through student chapters and a six-month internship programme, giving young engineers hands-on exposure to industries and standards development.
  • At the BIS Pavilion, visitors can take a Digital Sustainability Pledge. For each pledge taken, BIS will plant one sapling across its offices nationwide, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

India’s Strategic Role and Future Impact

  • Hosting the 89th IEC General Meeting underlines India’s rising stature in the global standards ecosystem. The platform allows Indian industries and policymakers to influence global standards and align domestic products for export readiness.
  • With growing ambitions in electric mobility, smart infrastructure, and renewable energy, India’s leadership in LVDC standardisation and hosting of the IEC GM align well with national missions like Make in India, Digital India, and Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

Key Takeaways

  • India is hosting 89th IEC GM from 15–19 Sep 2025 in New Delhi.
  • Bharat Mandapam is the venue; over 2,000 experts from 100+ countries participating.
