In the highly competitive Super GM chess tournament 2023, the young Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa emerged as the champion. He impressively scored 6.5 points, securing a clear first position in the 10-player event. After nine rounds of intense play, he finished one point ahead of M Amin Tabatabaei (Iran) and Russia’s Sanan Sjugirov.
Throughout the tournament, Praggnanandhaa achieved five wins, drew three games, and suffered only one defeat, which occurred in the fifth round against Amin Tabatabaei. In the final round, he played to a draw with Polish GM Radoslaw Wojtaszek, exhibiting his strong performance with the white pieces.
Praggnanandhaa scored wins over Sjugirov, Parham Maghsoodloo (Iran), Adam Kozak (Hungary) and Peter Prohaszka (Hungary).He drew his last three games, against Pavel Eljanov (Ukraine), Maxim Matlakov (Russia) and Wojtaszek. After his triumph, the young Indian Grandmaster’s live rating has risen significantly to an impressive 2707.3.

On 20 February 2022, he accomplished a significant feat by becoming the third Indian player (after Anand and Harikrishna) to defeat World Champion Magnus Carlsen in any time format.
In January 2023, Praggnanandhaa participated in the Tata Steel Chess Masters 2023, where he achieved a notable victory over the 2800-rated grandmaster Ding Liren. This marked his first time defeating such a highly-rated player in a classical game, and he concluded the tournament in 9th place.
