The Indian High Commission signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka to establish a Hindi Chair. The MoU was signed by High Commissioner Gopal Baglay, and Vice Chancellor of Sabaragamuwa University Professor Udaya Rathnayake.
The MoU aims to establish the Hindi Chair as a part of India’s cultural connection through the Indian Council for Cultural Relations. The Hindi chair will help in familiarizing students of Sabaragamuwa University with India, its history, and its culture. It will also pave the way for popularising Hindi by deputing Indian faculties.

The Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka is a public university located in Belihuloya, Balangoda, Sri Lanka. It was established on 20th November 1991. The systematic education in Sabaragamuwa province can be noticed since the times of King Parakramabahu II of the Dambadeniya Period. Under his patronage the Deva Pathiraja Pirivena, a 13th-century monastic university was created in the Palabaddala area of the Ratnapura district. Sabaragamuwa University is the 12th national university of contemporary Sri Lanka.
