Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur Launches Vikram Sodhi Centre for AI-Driven Mining Systems

Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur has announced the establishment of the Vikram Sodhi Centre of Excellence for the AI enabled geological and mining systems. This centre is backed by the ₹15 crore funding commitment over the five years and this initiative aims to transform the India’s mining sector via the artificial intelligence and data-driven innovation.

IIT Kharagpur AI-Driven Mining Research Hub

The newly launched centre of the IIT Kharagpur marks the significant advancement in to the India’s research ecosystem by combining the geological sciences, mining engineering and artificial intelligence into the unified framework.

The funding for this initiative has been provided by the Vikram Sodhi who is associated with Mineros SA and Sun Valley Investments.

This collaboration shows the growing trend of the industry leaders who are supporting the academic innovation to solve real-world challenges.

Bridging the Gap in India’s Mining Technology

Despite the gradual adoption of digital tools in the mining sector the implementation has often been fragmented and limits the overall impact.

The new centre seeks to overcome this limitation by creating the integrated mining-specific AI systems which connect every stage of the mining lifecycle.

With ensuring the seamless coordination between exploration, planning and the operation this centre will enable the more efficient resource utilization and improve the decision-making.

Comprehensive Focus Across the Mining Value Chain

The research activities also at the centre will cover the entire mining value chain and will ensures the holistic and interconnected approach.

It will also focus on to the areas such as the mineral exploration, mine planning, processing, predictive maintenance and environmental-social-governance (ESG) analytics.

By integrating these domains into the single intelligence system the centre aims to create the solutions that not only improve the operational efficiency but also ensure environmental sustainability and responsible mining practices.
