The Indian Navy successfully conducted the third edition of the Mahasagar summit, continuing its flagship outreach initiative for maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). Held virtually under the theme, “Training Cooperation to Mitigate Common Maritime Security Challenges in the IOR,” the summit brought together senior leaders from 10 countries to discuss collaborative efforts to tackle shared maritime threats.
Launched in 2003, Mahasagar is a bi-annual event aimed at fostering cooperation among maritime heads in the IOR. It has become an essential platform for discussing maritime security challenges, strengthening partnerships, and developing training programs to build regional capabilities. The event underscores India’s commitment to the vision of “Active Security and Growth for All in the Region” (ASGAR).
Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, led the high-level discussions with representatives from Bangladesh, Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Maldives, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania. The focus was on the importance of quality training and the creation of opportunities for training collaborations among IOR nations to address growing maritime challenges such as piracy, illegal fishing, and environmental threats.
The summit stressed the need for enhancing regional maritime security by developing a skilled workforce capable of responding to complex security scenarios. It highlighted the shared maritime interests in the region and the importance of cooperative efforts to ensure long-term stability in the strategically vital Indian Ocean.
Mahasagar, since its inception in 2023, has emerged as a key venue for promoting regional maritime stability. This edition reaffirmed the need for continued collaboration and skill-building to address evolving maritime security challenges in the IOR. The Indian Navy’s role in shaping this cooperative effort underscores its leadership in the region’s maritime security framework.
