India’s Solar Power Grows 4,000%, Says Piyush Goyal
Union Minister Shri Piyush Goyal announced that India’s solar power capacity has grown by 4,000% over the last few years. Speaking at the India Energy Storage Week (IESW) in New Delhi, he said the country has reached 227 GW of renewable energy and is on track to become energy self-reliant. This is a big step for India’s clean energy future.
At the IESW 2025 event, Shri Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, said India may be the first G20 country to meet its climate goals set in the Paris Agreement. He praised the progress in solar panel manufacturing, noting that solar module capacity grew 38 times and solar cell capacity increased 21 times in the last 10 years.
He also mentioned successful programmes like the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, which aims to provide rooftop solar panels to 1 crore households, and the PM Kusum Yojana, which promotes solar pumps for farmers.
Shri Goyal stressed the need to focus on energy storage to support renewable sources. He explained the importance of batteries, pumped storage, and hydro systems in providing round-the-clock clean power. He also highlighted a new ₹1 lakh crore Innovation Fund approved by the Cabinet to support research in next-gen batteries, including solid-state and hybrid technologies.
The government has also launched the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme to encourage companies to manufacture Advanced Chemistry Cells (ACC) in India.
The Minister urged industries to build resilient supply chains that don’t depend too much on one country or region. He spoke about developing every part of the energy ecosystem, from raw materials to battery recycling, semiconductors, and charging infrastructure.
He said this all-round growth will help India become energy self-sufficient and a global leader in clean energy technology. The Minister also called for partnerships among industry players, researchers, and policymakers to make this vision a reality.
The India Energy Storage Week (IESW) is a yearly event that brings together leaders from the energy, battery, e-mobility, and green hydrogen sectors. This year’s event, held at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi, showcased clean energy solutions, latest technologies, and government policies. Shri Goyal praised the organisers for creating a space for learning and partnerships, which will help India reach its 500 GW renewable energy target by 2030.
