International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination 2026: History, Significance & Global Fight

International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed every year on March 21. This day is to promote equality and fight racism worldwide. The day also commemorates the tragic Sharpeville Massacre of 1960 in where 69 peaceful protesters were killed in South Africa. The day was established by the United Nations and observance highlights the need for global action against racial discrimination.

Historical Background Of The Day

The origin of this day trace back to the Sharpeville Massacre and it is the turning point in the global fight against racial discrimination.

On March 211960  the South African police opened fire on to the peaceful protesters opposing apartheid pass laws.

This incident shocked the world and exposed the brutality of racial segregation policies.

And hence it became a symbol of resistance against racism and led to increased international pressure to dismantle this thing.

The United Nations established the observance to encourage global action against racism and to promote equality.
