Jeevan-Vijay Pair Wins Hangzhou Open 2024
India’s Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and Vijay Sundar Prashanth clinched the men’s doubles title at the 2024 Hangzhou Open after a thrilling final against Germany’s Constantin Frantzen and Hendrik Jebens on September 24. The unseeded Indian duo won the match with a score of 4-6, 7(7)-6(5), 10-7 at the Hangzhou Olympics Sports Centre, marking their first ATP Tour title together.
The final lasted one hour and 49 minutes. Frantzen and Jebens initially dominated the match, securing the first set by breaking in the fifth game and winning their service games without dropping a point. However, Jeevan and Vijay responded in the second set, holding their serves and ultimately taking the set in a tie-breaker.
With the match tied at one set each, the action moved to a 10-point super tiebreaker. Despite trailing 5-4, the Indian pair rallied to win six of the last eight points, clinching the championship.
For 35-year-old Jeevan, this victory marks his second ATP title, with his previous win dating back to the 2017 Chennai Open alongside Rohan Bopanna. In contrast, 37-year-old Vijay celebrated his first title on the ATP circuit.
All of Jeevan and Vijay’s victories at the Hangzhou Open were achieved in super tiebreakers. They began their campaign by defeating Australians Blake Bayldon and Thomas Fancutt (7(7)-6(4), 4-6, 10-7), followed by a victory over the second-seeded British team of Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool (6(4)-7(7), 7(8)-6(6), 10-8). In the semifinals, they overcame Uruguay’s Ariel Behar and the USA’s Robert Galloway, seeded third, in a similar thrilling fashion, winning 0-6, 6-2, 10-4.
