Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the 125th birth anniversary celebration of the legendary freedom fighters Alluri Sitarama Raju in Bhimavaram, Andhra Pradesh. The occasion was facilitated by the Governor of Andhra Pradesh Shri Biswabhusan Harichandan, Chief Minister Shri Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, and Union Minister Shri G. Kishan Reddy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the gathering and said that he feels privileged at getting an opportunity to salute the land of Andra Pradesh with such a rich legacy. It mentioned the major events like Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, the 125th birth anniversary of Alluri Sitarama Raju, and 100 years of Rampa Rebellion. Prime Minister Narendra Modi bowed and paid his tribute to “Manyam Veerdu” Alluri Sitarama Raju.

Prime minister Narendra Modi announced that the 125th birth anniversary of Alluri Sitarama Raju and the 100th anniversary of Rampa Kranti will be celebrated throughout the year. To make everyone aware of the legendary contribution of our freedom fighters, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the restoration of Alluri Sitarama Raju and Rampa Kranti’s birthplace at Pandrangi, renovation of Chintapalli police station, and construction of Alluri Dhyana Mandir at Mogallu. He also mentioned that Alluri Sitarama Raju Garu is not only a legendary freedom fighter but a symbol of India’s culture, tribal identity, valor, ideals, and values, and his sacrifice and life journey are an inspiration to all of us. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Alluri Sitarama Raju dedicated his life to the rights of tribal society, their happiness and sorrow, and their freedom. He said, “Alluri Sitarama Raju represents the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ that has been uniting the country in one thread of unity.”

Union Minister for Culture Shri G.K Reddy also facilitated the occasion and said, “Today, this effort under the leadership of our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji to recognize Alluri Sitarama Raju’s contribution in nation-building will enable a new generation to be aware of the heroic and the sacrifices made.” He also said, “The patriotic spark reinforced by Alluri Sitarama Raju and several other heroes like him across the nation, continues to thrive within us even today. One can sense his undying bravery from the fact that he would forewarn the British officers of an imminent attack and would challenge them to stop him with the resources that they had at hand”. “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav has allowed us to celebrate the unsung, unknown and the underappreciated in a structured manner. It has enabled the government to come together at all levels along with the civil society, NGOs, spiritual organizations, and passionate individuals to recognize and remember the people and events that made us India.”

1. Alluri Sitarama Raju was an Indian revolutionary who fought against the British army by waging an armed campaign.
2. He was named “Manyam Veerdu” which means Hero of the Jungle by the locals for his heroic exploits.
3. He was born in Andhra Pradesh and he was involved in the freedom fight against the British during the 1882 Madras Forest Act.
4. He inspired the tribals to fight back against injustice, under the influence of Gandhi’s Non-cooperation movement.
5. In 1922, he led the Rampa Rebellion or the Manyam Rebellion.
6. Alluri Sitarama Raju was taken into police custody in 1924 and was tied to a tree where he was shot by public execution.
