Light combat helicopter (LCH) added in IAF Jodhpur Base: Key Points

  • Speaking at the occasion, Mr. Singh stated that the addition of Light Combat Helicopters (LCH) not only strengthens the Air Force’s combat capabilities but also represents a significant step towards the achievement of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
  • During the Kargil War, he said, there was a clear need for a combat helicopter, and the LCH is the result of two decades of work to fill that requirement.
  • Light Combat Helicopters (LCH) is a product of Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL). It is a cutting-edge contemporary combat helicopter that was particularly created for use in high-altitude environments.
  • The Light Combat Helicopters (LCH) assault helicopter is the only one in the world that can land and take off at 5,000 metres while carrying a sizable load of ammunition and fuel.
  • Two Shakti engines power this helicopter, which also has crash-worthy landing gear, stealth characteristics, all-weather combat capabilities, armour protection, and night assault capabilities.
  • Due to its thin fuselage and tandem cockpit design, Light Combat Helicopters (LCH) is incredibly nimble and manoeuvrable.
  • Its stealth characteristics, such as a small radar cross section and a low infrared signature, enable it to sneak behind enemy lines and launch a targeted strike.

Features of Light Combat Helicopters (LCH):

  • LCH has a 550 km range and a 6500 m operating ceiling. It is equipped with 20 mm cannon, 70 mm rockets, and air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles.
  • The flight crew’s helmet-mounted display, an electronic warfare suite, and a complete glass cockpit are among its many features.
  • Light Combat Helicopters (LCH) is capable of a variety of tasks, including as combat search and rescue, neutralising enemy air defence, and conducting counterinsurgency operations in both urban and forest settings.
  • In March of this year, the Cabinet Committee on Security gave its approval for the procurement of 15 indigenous Light Combat Helicopters (LCH) helicopters.
