Wabtec Locomotive Private Limited, a joint venture between Indian Railways and Wabtec, is set to enhance its Marhowra plant’s capabilities by exporting Evolution Series ES43ACmi locomotives to global customers, particularly in Africa, starting in 2025. This initiative marks the plant’s inaugural venture into manufacturing locomotives for export, underscoring India’s growing prominence in the global locomotive manufacturing sector.
The ES43ACmi locomotive features a robust 4,500 HP Evolution Series engine, designed for exceptional fuel efficiency and reliable performance in high-temperature conditions. The project aligns with the “Make in India” and “Make for the World” initiatives under the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” vision, aiming to establish India as a global manufacturing hub.
The export of locomotives from the Marhowra plant is strategically vital, as it not only boosts local manufacturing but also enhances job creation in India. By expanding its global footprint, the plant aims to foster long-term economic benefits while supporting local suppliers across the country. To date, approximately 650 locomotives have been integrated into the Indian Railways fleet, demonstrating the successful collaboration between the Ministry of Railways and Wabtec.
Established in 2018 on 70 acres in Marhowra, Bihar, the plant was designed to manufacture 1,000 state-of-the-art locomotives for Indian Railways. Currently employing around 600 people, it consistently delivers 100 locomotives annually, significantly contributing to industrial growth in the region. Ongoing collaboration between the Ministry of Railways and Wabtec aims to enhance the plant’s capabilities and ensure its competitiveness for sustained export production.
