Matsya-6000: India’s Deep-Ocean Submersible Completes Wet Testing

The Matsya-6000 is a cutting-edge, fourth-generation deep-ocean human submersible designed under the Government of India’s Deep Ocean Mission. The submersible is part of the Samudrayan Project, spearheaded by the Ministry of Earth Sciences and developed by the National Institute of Ocean Technology. Its primary objective is to enhance India’s capabilities in deep-ocean exploration. Matsya-6000, capable of accommodating three humans, boasts advanced technologies and has successfully completed dry and wet testing to ensure its operational efficiency at depths of up to 500 meters.

Key Features of Matsya-6000

  • Hull and Design: Compact 2.1-meter diameter spherical hull designed to house three humans.
  • Subsystems: Includes main ballast system, thrusters for movement, battery bank, syntactic foam for buoyancy, power distribution, control hardware/software, and navigation devices.
  • Communication Systems: Features acoustic modem, underwater telephone, VHF, GPS, and underwater acoustic positioning for communication and precise location tracking.
  • Life Support and Sensors: Equipped with life-support systems, navigation joysticks, oceanographic sensors, underwater lighting, and cameras.

Testing and Trials

  • Integrated dry tests over a 500-meter operational range, followed by wet tests at L&T Shipbuilding facility at Kattupalli Port.

Testing Phases

  • Integrated Dry Tests: Conducted over a 500-meter range to test power, control systems, flotation, stability, maneuverability, and communication.
  • Wet Tests: Conducted in the harbour with eight dives (five unmanned and three manned) focusing on human safety, system reliability, and scientific payload testing.
  • Further Testing Needs: Additional testing is required for optimal performance at greater depths beyond 500 meters, especially for underwater communication.
