The National Engineers’ Day 2026 will be commemorated throughout India on 15 September, which is the birth anniversary of celebrated civil engineer, administrator, and statesman Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. Being born in 1861, Visvesvaraya made remarkable contributions to irrigation, water management, flood prevention, and public infrastructure and became the Dewan of Mysore. In 1955 he received the Bharat Ratna for his contribution to engineering and nation building. What is Sir M. Visvesvaraya?

Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya (1861-1962) was an Indian civil engineer, administrator, and statesman whose career was connected to irrigation, water management, flood control, and infrastructure development.

Muddenahalli village in Karnataka was the birthplace of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya who received his initial education through BA in the University of Madras followed by civil engineering education in the College of Science in Pune.

Visvesvaraya’s work was not limited to the technical aspects of engineering. He believed in the importance of applying the engineering practices to improve the lives of people and develop industries and infrastructure.

Major Contribution of M. Visvesvaraya

Dam of the Krishna Raja Sagara

• Visvesvaraya was instrumental in the construction of the Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) Dam, located in Mysore. The dam gained significance for irrigation purposes due to its contribution towards better water supply.

Automatic Sluice Gates

• Another achievement of Visvesvaraya’s was his designing of automatic sluice gates. The gates were first installed at Khadakvasla Reservoir near Pune in 1903.

Flood Prevention and Control

• Visvesvaraya was involved in developing solutions after the disastrous 1908 flooding of the Musi River in Hyderabad. This also included his involvement in matters related to reservoirs and urban flooding.
• He was also involved in preventing Visakhapatnam Port from being affected by sea erosion.

Mysore Development

• As the Dewan of Mysore from 1912 to 1918, Visvesvaraya’s contributions included the development of industries and institutions like Bhadravati Iron and Steel Plant, Mysore Soap Factory, and State Bank of Mysore.
• His contributions towards the development of the princely state of Mysore have earned him recognition as the “Father of Modern Mysore.”

Why was Visvesvaraya Given the Bharat Ratna?

In 1955, the Government of India presented Visvesvaraya with the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civil award. It honoured his contributions to engineering, industries, public works, and nation-building.

Moreover, he wrote books such as “Planned Economy for India,” “Reconstructing India,” and “Memoirs of My Working Life.” Thus, he showed his interest in economic development, education, administration, and industrialisation.
