History: Honouring the Hockey Wizard

Major Dhyan Chand (1905–1979), known as the “Hockey Wizard,” is regarded as one of the finest athletes in world hockey. He led India to Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932, and 1936, captivating global audiences with his exceptional stickwork and game sense.

To honour his legacy, the Government of India declared 29 August as National Sports Day. The day serves to inspire future generations and celebrate India’s rich sporting tradition.
