PM Modi Attends 17th BRICS Summit in Brazil
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took part in the 17th BRICS Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on 6–7 July 2025. Leaders from BRICS countries met to talk about global reforms, peace and security, multilateral cooperation, and the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The summit was important as it focused on giving a stronger voice to the Global South and shaping a more balanced world order.
During the session on “Reform of Global Governance and Peace and Security”, PM Modi stressed the need to update global institutions like the UN Security Council, IMF, World Bank, and WTO. He said these organizations were formed in the 20th century and cannot handle today’s challenges unless they are reformed. He also thanked other leaders for including strong support for UN reforms in the Summit Declaration.
On the topic of peace and security, Modi raised concern about rising terrorism. He referred to the Pahalgam terror attack in April 2025, calling it not just an attack on India but on all humanity. He urged the world to act strongly against terrorism and punish those who support or protect terrorists. He appreciated the BRICS countries for condemning the attack and stressed that there should be zero tolerance and no double standards when it comes to terrorism.
Modi also spoke about the ongoing conflicts in West Asia and Europe, describing them as serious matters. He said India has always believed in resolving disputes through dialogue and diplomacy and is ready to help in any peace efforts. This shows India’s consistent role as a peace supporter on the world stage.
In the second session on “Multilateral, Economic-Financial Affairs and AI”, the Prime Minister said BRICS must remain united to deal with global changes and uncertainties. He gave four ideas to make BRICS stronger,
At the end of the summit, all member countries adopted the ‘Rio de Janeiro Declaration’, which included shared goals on global reforms, peace, technology, and financial development. PM Modi also thanked Brazil’s President for the warm welcome and successful organization of the summit.
