Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) 2026: Date, History, Significance and Key Facts
Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD), also known as Non-Resident Indian (NRI) Day, is observed every year on January 9 to recognise and celebrate the invaluable contribution of the Overseas Indian community to India’s development. The day holds deep historical importance as it marks the return of Mahatma Gandhi to India from South Africa on January 9, 1915, a moment that later shaped India’s freedom struggle.
Since 2015, Pravasi Bharatiya Divas conventions have been organised biennially. As 2026 is a non-convention year, no large-scale central event such as plenary sessions or award ceremonies is expected. However, regional events, webinars, cultural programmes, and youth-centric interactions are likely to be organised by Indian missions abroad.
Launched in 2003 by the Government of India, PBD aims to strengthen ties between India and its vast diaspora, estimated at over 35 million NRIs and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs).
The 19th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention is expected to be held in 2027.
The 18th PBD Convention (January 8–10, 2025) was hosted in Bhubaneswar with the theme “Diaspora Contribution to a Viksit Bharat”. It saw participation from diaspora representatives of over 50 countries.
The event was inaugurated by Narendra Modi, with the President of Trinidad and Tobago as the chief guest, via virtual address. It showcased India’s global outreach and the growing role of overseas Indians in national development.
Enhances India’s influence through diaspora advocacy in host countries
A notable initiative linked with PBD is the Pravasi Bharatiya Express, a luxury tourist train operated by IRCTC under the Pravasi Teerth Darshan Yojana of the Ministry of External Affairs. It offers a 16–17 day guided pilgrimage tour across major cultural and religious sites in India for selected PIOs, helping them reconnect with their roots.
