The installation of these FM transmitters in 84 districts is expected to increase the coverage by about 35,000 sq km. The move is expected to play a significant role in disseminating timely information, weather forecasts for agriculture, and connecting women self-help groups with new markets.
Prime Minister Modi noted that the tech revolution in the country has helped radio to emerge in a new avatar, bringing in new listeners to the medium. He added that the government is constantly working towards the democratization of technology.
The expansion of FM radio connectivity in India has focused on enhancing coverage in priority states, including Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Ladakh, and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
The expansion comes two days before the landmark 100th episode of Mann Ki Baat, the Prime Minister’s monthly radio program. The program has gained immense popularity across the country, and the expansion of FM radio connectivity is expected to improve the reach of the program further.
