Bopanna has now won 24 ATP titles, including five ATP Masters 1000, and has become the oldest player to win an ATP Masters 1000 title, breaking the record of Canadian Daniel Nestor, who won the 2015 Cincinnati Masters at the age of 42. This was Bopanna’s second title this year, having won the Qatar Open with Ebden last month.
In the semi-finals of the Indian Wells Masters, the unseeded Bopanna-Ebden pair defeated the defending champions John Isner and Jack Sock of the USA in straight sets. They also won their quarter-final match against the Canadian pair of Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov in straight sets. Bopanna-Ebden received a walkover in the round of 16 and won their opening match against Rafael Matos of Brazil and David Vega Hernandez of Spain in three sets.
Before the tournament, Bopanna, a former world No. 3 in men’s doubles, was ranked 15th in the ATP doubles rankings. However, after winning the Indian Wells Masters, he has moved up to 11th in the live doubles tennis rankings.
