Rohit Sharma becomes 2nd player after MS Dhoni to play 250 matches in IPL
Rohit Sharma, the former captain of the Mumbai Indians, etched his name in the annals of Indian Premier League (IPL) history by becoming only the second player to feature in 250 IPL matches. This remarkable milestone was achieved during a match against the Punjab Kings in Mullanpur, Chandigarh, further solidifying Rohit’s status as an IPL legend.
Rohit’s IPL journey commenced in 2008 with the now-defunct Deccan Chargers. Since 2011, he has been an integral part of the Mumbai Indians, leading them to an unprecedented five IPL titles. The only player ahead of him in terms of IPL appearances is the iconic MS Dhoni, who has graced the tournament with 256 matches.
In his illustrious IPL career spanning 249 matches prior to the milestone, Rohit has amassed an impressive 6472 runs at an average of 30.10 and a blistering strike rate of 131.22. His batting prowess is further exemplified by his tally of two centuries and 42 half-centuries.
One of those memorable centuries came in Mumbai Indians’ last match against the Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, where Rohit scored an unbeaten 105. However, his team fell short by 20 runs while chasing a target of 207, despite Rohit’s heroics.
Rohit Sharma’s cricketing achievements extend far beyond the IPL. He holds several prestigious batting records, including the most sixes in international cricket, the most double centuries in ODI cricket (3), the most centuries at Cricket World Cups (7), and is tied for the most hundreds in Twenty20 Internationals (5).
Rohit’s exceptional performances have been recognized with numerous awards and accolades. In 2015, he received the prestigious ‘Arjuna Award’ and was named Sportsman of the Year at the GQ awards. He has been included in the ICC ODI Team of the Year multiple times (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019) and was named ICC ODI Player of the Year in 2019.
Additionally, Rohit received the Golden Bat award in 2019 for scoring the most runs in the ICC Cricket World Cup and was honored with the Sportsman of the Year award at the Indian Sports Honours. In 2020, he was bestowed with the highest sporting honor in India, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, further cementing his legacy as one of the nation’s cricketing greats.
