Sahityotsav, World’s Biggest Lit Fest From March 11-16

Sahitya Akademi, the esteemed National Academy of Letters in India, is marking its 70th anniversary this year, and in honor of this milestone, the annual ‘Sahityotsav’ has transformed into the world’s largest literary festival.

A Grand Celebration of Literature

Dr. K. Sreenivasrao, Secretary of Sahitya Akademi, has revealed that over 1100 renowned writers and scholars will grace the event, participating in more than 190 sessions. Additionally, the festival will showcase the rich linguistic diversity of India, with representation from over 175 languages.

The Festival of Letters Unveiled

The Festival of Letters, spanning across over 190 sessions, will kick off with an exhibition highlighting the Akademi’s significant activities from the preceding year. The pinnacle of the festival will be the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Awards 2023 presentation ceremony, scheduled for March 12th at 5:30 pm in the Kamani Auditorium. Notably, the distinguished Odia writer, Pratibha Rai, will grace the occasion as the Chief Guest.

Insightful Lectures and Discussions

Renowned Urdu writer and lyricist, Gulzar, will deliver the esteemed Samvatsar lecture on March 13th at 6:30 pm at the Meghdoot open theatre, adding a touch of literary brilliance to the festival.

Varied Programmes and Panels

The festival promises a diverse array of activities, including the felicitation of Sahitya Akademi Fellows on March 11th. Among the scheduled events are Multilingual Poetry readings, short story readings, and discussions on topics ranging from Bhakti Literature of India to the Novels of the Future.

Exploring Literary Themes and Movements

Panel discussions and symposia will delve into critical themes such as:

  • Cultural Heritage of India
  • Science Fiction in Indian Languages
  • Ethics and Literature
  • Biographies in Indian Languages
  • Literature and Social Movements
  • Indian Literature Abroad

Special Focus on Inclusivity

The festival also dedicates attention to marginalized voices with programs like the All India Differently Abled Writers’ Meet and the LGBTQ Writers’ Meet. Additionally, there will be seminars commemorating the birth centenary of Mir Taqi Mir and discussions on various literary genres and traditions.

Sahityotsav, in its expanded form, emerges as not just a celebration of literature but a vibrant platform for cultural exchange, dialogue, and the exploration of diverse literary landscapes.
