Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, achieved the remarkable feat of setting a new Guinness world record for the fastest hit by a male player in badminton in the ongoing Korea Open 2023. His smash reached an astonishing speed of 565 km/h, surpassing the decade-long record set in May 2013 by Malaysian player Tan Boon Heong, who had previously recorded a speed of 493 km/h with his smash.
Satwik’s incredible smash surpassed the top speed of 372.6 km/h achieved by a Formula 1 car. The Guinness World Records officially verified Satwik’s smash, which took place at the Yonex factory gymnasium in Soka, Saitama, Japan during the Korea Open 2023, and it was performed under controlled conditions.
In the female category, Malaysia’s Tan Pearly set the Guinness world record for the fastest female badminton hits with a remarkable speed of 438 km/h (about 272 mph).
On the opening day of Korea Open 2023, Indian men’s doubles duo, Satwiksairaj and Chirag Shetty, secured a spot in the pre-quarterfinals by defeating Thailand’s Supak Jomkoh and Kittinupong Kedren with a score of 21-16, 21-14. Despite falling behind in the second game, they displayed resilience and managed to win the match convincingly in straight games. Out of all the Indian participants, Satwik and Chirag were the only ones to secure entry into the pre-quarterfinals. The Korea Open 2023 is scheduled to take place from July 18, 2023, to July 23, 2023.
