Shubman Gill becomes fastest batter to score 2000 runs in ODIs
Shubman Gill, the dynamic Indian opener, has created a significant mark in the world of One Day International (ODI) cricket by becoming the fastest player to reach 2000 runs in this format. His achievement, which surpasses a previous record held by South African great Hashim Amla, adds to his growing reputation as a rising star in the world of cricket.
38 Innings Milestone
Shubman Gill accomplished this remarkable feat during India’s World Cup match against New Zealand. He reached the 2000-run milestone in just 38 innings, setting a new world record. This achievement surpassed the previous record held by Hashim Amla, who had taken 40 innings to achieve the same milestone.
Crucial Boundary Against New Zealand
Gill entered the match needing 14 runs to reach the 2000-run mark. He achieved this feat in style during the seventh over of India’s run chase when he dispatched a delivery from Trent Boult for a boundary, showcasing his impeccable batting skills.
Valuable Contribution
During the match against New Zealand, Shubman Gill played a valuable inning, contributing 26 runs off 31 balls. However, his innings was cut short in the 14th over when Lockie Ferguson took his wicket.
Battle with Dengue
What makes Gill’s achievement even more remarkable is that he had missed India’s first two World Cup matches against Australia and Afghanistan due to dengue. His return to the team in the marquee clash against Pakistan, where he scored 16 runs, demonstrated his resilience and determination to make a comeback.
Hashim Amla’s Previous Record
Hashim Amla, a legendary South African cricketer, had held the record for the fastest 2000 ODI runs before Gill’s accomplishment. Amla achieved this milestone on January 21, 2011, during a match against India in St George’s Park, Port Elizabeth.
