Sawaminarayan Jayanti is the special day when the birth of Shri Swaminarayan or Sahajanand Swami is celebrated. He was a great saint, yogi and spiritual leader. He taught people to follow truth, non-violence, and celibacy. His followers believe he was an avatar (divine form) of Lord Krishna.
Swaminarayan Jayanti is celebrated on the ninth day of the bright half (Shukla Paksha) of the Hindu month of Chaitra. This day also falls on Ram Navami, the birthday of Lord Ram.
Shri Swaminarayan was born in 1781 in a small town called Chapaiya near Ayodhya. His childhood name was Ghanshyam. His mother was Bhakti Mata and his father was Dharma Dev.
From childhood, he showed great wisdom. By age 7, he had learned holy texts like the Ramayan, Vedas and Shrimad Bhagwatam. At age 11, he left home and traveled barefoot across India for spiritual growth. He walked over 7,000 miles! At age 14, he learned advanced yoga (Ashtanga Yoga) and by age 20, he became a spiritual leader.
At the age of 49, Shri Swaminarayan left his physical body and is believed to live in the divine place called Akshardham. His teachings still guide millions of people today.
This day is very special for followers of Shri Swaminarayan. They believe he came to Earth to spread good values and remove evil. His life is full of examples of truth, peace and dedication to God.
