Tamil Nadu: Banning online gambling games:

The Tamil Nadu Assembly had passed the bill banning online gambling games and regulating them in October 2022. However, the Governor returned the bill in March 2023, citing that the state legislature had no “legislative competence” to frame the bill.

To address this issue, the Tamil Nadu Assembly re-adopted the bill on March 23, 2023, and sent it again for the Governor’s assent. The Governor gave his approval to the bill, which aims to ban online gambling and regulate online games in Tamil Nadu.

The Governor gave assent to the Bill on the same day that the state government passed a resolution in the state Assembly, calling for the President and Central government to issue appropriate instructions to fix a time frame for Governors to approve bills.

Key details of the bill:

The Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Online Gambling and Regulation of Online Games Bill has several specifications, including the prohibition of advertisements promoting online gambling or playing online games with money or other stakes.

Violators of the provision will face imprisonment of up to one year, a fine of up to Rs 5 lakh, or both.

Additionally, those who provide online gambling services or games of poker and rummy with money or other stakes will face punishment with imprisonment for up to three years, a fine of up to Rs 10 lakh, or both.
