Tamil Nadu Launches Annapoorani Super Six LPG Scheme

The Tamil Nadu government has come up with yet another scheme by introducing the Annapoorani Super Six LPG Scheme. This new welfare scheme has been launched in order to reduce the cost of domestic LPG consumption by eligible households. This new scheme has been introduced in the State Assembly on August 24, 2026, and it will commence on Pongal Day in January 2027. According to the scheme, beneficiaries will get the refund of the cost incurred in purchasing domestic LPG cylinders into their bank accounts.

What is the Annapoorani Super Six LPG Scheme?

The Annapoorani Super Six LPG Scheme is an initiative by the Tamil Nadu government meant to give financial assistance to families for their LPG purchases.

In this case, rather than giving the cylinders free of charge at purchase, the scheme will operate on a reimbursement process where the beneficiary families will purchase the cylinders and receive their reimbursement into their bank accounts.

In this light, Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) is crucial in the scheme.

Who Can Benefit From It?

There are certain categories of people who are eligible under this scheme. These include,

• Families whose annual income does not exceed ₹2.5 lakh
• Middle farmers
• Marginal farmers
• Persons with disabilities

The Tamil Nadu government plans to launch the scheme using the state’s welfare and public distribution mechanism.

₹4,000 Crore Annual Budget

Under the Annapoorani Super Six LPG Scheme, the Tamil Nadu government plans to spend about ₹4,000 crore annually.

This amount of money is meant to reduce the expenses incurred on cooking gas within eligible groups of people.

When Will the Scheme Be Launched?

The launch of the Annapoorani Super Six LPG Scheme will take place on Pongal Day in January 2027.

Pongal is the main harvest festival of Tamil Nadu, which takes place each year in January. The connection with the festival adds another dimension to the welfare program within the State.

LPG Subsidies Programs in India

The LPG schemes are often launched by both Central and State governments for the purpose of providing the clean energy for cooking.

On the national level, there is a scheme that was initiated in 2016 and called Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY). It aims at making the use of LPG cheaper for women from the families of low-income citizens.
