Tata Steel Commissions India’s Largest Blast Furnace in Kalinganagar

Tata Steel has successfully commissioned India’s largest blast furnace at its Kalinganagar facility in Odisha, marking a significant milestone for the steel sector. With a total investment of Rs 27,000 crore, this Phase II expansion will increase the plant’s capacity from 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 8 MTPA. The new facility is designed to meet the growing demands of various industries, including automotive, infrastructure, shipbuilding, defence, and oil and gas. Over the last decade, Odisha has become the largest investment destination for Tata Steel, with a cumulative investment exceeding Rs 100,000 crore.

Advanced Features of the New Blast Furnace

The newly commissioned blast furnace boasts a volume of 5,870 m³ and incorporates cutting-edge technology aimed at enhancing efficiency and environmental protection. Key features include:

  • Top Combustion and Preheating Stoves: The blast furnace utilises four top combustion stoves and two preheating stoves, optimising fuel consumption during hot metal production.
  • Energy Recovery Systems: The installation of the world’s largest Top Gas Recovery Turbine (TRT) with a power generation capacity of 35 MW will enable an additional 10% energy recovery from by-product gas.
  • Eco-Friendly Design: Equipped with a dry gas cleaning plant and an evaporative cooling system, this facility will lower water and power consumption by approximately 20% compared to conventional designs, with a zero-process water discharge plan and rainwater harvesting initiatives.

Government Support and Future Expansion

T. V. Narendran, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Steel, praised the Government of Odisha for their support and acknowledged the contributions of employees, suppliers, and partners in achieving this landmark project. Future expansions at Kalinganagar include a Pellet Plant, Coke Plant, and Cold Rolling Mill, all employing integrated technologies to foster a sustainable environment. The commissioning of this blast furnace not only positions Tata Steel as a leader in the premium value-added market segments but also sets the stage for new records in capacity and efficiency within the industry.
