Nutmeg is one of the world’s most treasured spices, known for its warm aroma and rich flavor that enhances both sweet and savory dishes. Grown mainly in tropical regions, nutmeg has a fascinating history tied to global trade and cultural traditions. Today, only a handful of countries cultivate nutmeg on a large scale, and one of them leads as the biggest producer worldwide.
The largest producer of nutmeg in the world is Indonesia, which accounts for over 70% of global production. Each year, Indonesia grows around 40,000–45,000 tonnes of nutmeg.
The spice is mainly cultivated in the Maluku and North Maluku provinces, especially in the Banda Islands, once called the “Spice Islands.” Indonesia’s fertile volcanic soil and tropical climate create perfect conditions for nutmeg trees (Myristica fragrans).
Nutmeg farming in Indonesia supports thousands of small farmers and plays a major role in the country’s spice economy. Indonesian nutmeg is highly valued for its strong fragrance, high oil content, and export quality.
Here is the list of top-5 nutmeg producing countries in the world by 2025:
