Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal Unveils India’s First Zero-Emission Electric Tug Project

India has taken an important step toward clean and modern port operations. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal virtually launched the steel-cutting ceremony for the country’s first fully electric green tug. This project is part of India’s effort to make its ports cleaner, greener and ready for the future.

A Major Step Toward Green Maritime Growth

The new tug is being built for the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) in Kandla under the Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP). Sonowal shared that this project supports Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a self-reliant and environmentally friendly maritime sector. It also fits perfectly with India’s goals of Make in India, green growth, and leadership in green shipping technology.

Key Features of the All-Electric Tug

The electric tug will come with modern technologies designed to cut emissions and improve performance.

It will include:

  • 60-ton bollard pull capacity
  • Zero carbon emissions
  • Quiet and smooth operations
  • Advanced navigation systems
  • High energy efficiency

Experts believe the tug will reduce running costs and inspire ports across India to upgrade their fleets with cleaner technologies.

Progress under the Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP)

The government plans to add 50 green tugs by 2030.

  • 16 green tugs will be introduced between 2024 and 2027 in the first phase.
  • DPA, Kandla is the first port to begin actual construction.
  • Other major ports like Paradip, JNPA, and VOC Port have also issued work orders.

Where and How the Tug is Being Built?

The tug is being constructed at Atreya Shipyard with support from both Indian and global technology partners. Once completed, it will be used for harbor operations, escort duties and emergency response, helping improve port safety and efficiency.

Aligned with India’s Global Commitments

This project supports India’s climate goals and international decarbonization promises. It also aligns with the targets set under Maritime India Vision 2030 and the long-term development goals of Amrit Kaal.

A New Era for Sustainable Indian Ports

Sonowal said the launch of the electric tug marks the start of a new chapter for India’s ports. It shows the nation’s strong commitment to building a sustainable, competitive and world-class maritime ecosystem.
