India has taken an important step toward clean and modern port operations. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal virtually launched the steel-cutting ceremony for the country’s first fully electric green tug. This project is part of India’s effort to make its ports cleaner, greener and ready for the future.
The new tug is being built for the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) in Kandla under the Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP). Sonowal shared that this project supports Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a self-reliant and environmentally friendly maritime sector. It also fits perfectly with India’s goals of Make in India, green growth, and leadership in green shipping technology.
The electric tug will come with modern technologies designed to cut emissions and improve performance.
It will include:
Experts believe the tug will reduce running costs and inspire ports across India to upgrade their fleets with cleaner technologies.
The government plans to add 50 green tugs by 2030.
The tug is being constructed at Atreya Shipyard with support from both Indian and global technology partners. Once completed, it will be used for harbor operations, escort duties and emergency response, helping improve port safety and efficiency.
This project supports India’s climate goals and international decarbonization promises. It also aligns with the targets set under Maritime India Vision 2030 and the long-term development goals of Amrit Kaal.
Sonowal said the launch of the electric tug marks the start of a new chapter for India’s ports. It shows the nation’s strong commitment to building a sustainable, competitive and world-class maritime ecosystem.
