Uttar Pradesh to Get 76th District Named Kalyan Singh Nagar

The Uttar Pradesh government has announced the creation of a new district named Kalyan Singh Nagar, in honour of former Chief Minister Kalyan Singh, a towering figure in the state’s political history. This will be Uttar Pradesh’s 76th district, carved out from tehsils in Aligarh and Bulandshahr districts. The move not only pays tribute to the late leader but also aims to enhance administrative efficiency in the region.

District in Honour of a Leader

  • Kalyan Singh, who served as Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Minister twice (1991–92 and 1997–99), was deeply associated with Atrauli, his birthplace and political stronghold.
  • CM Yogi Adityanath confirmed the decision during a public address, emphasising Singh’s contributions to state development and governance.
  • The government has begun preparations and directed local district magistrates to prepare feasibility reports.

Proposed Geography of Kalyan Singh Nagar

According to the government’s initial plan, Kalyan Singh Nagar will be created by merging the following tehsils,

  • Atrauli (Aligarh)
  • Gangiri (Aligarh)
  • Dibai (Bulandshahr)

These areas form the political and cultural heart of the region that Kalyan Singh represented for decades. The move is intended to not only honour him but also address administrative needs in the relatively underdeveloped belt.

Administrative and Developmental Significance

  • The formation of the new district aligns with the Yogi government’s broader agenda of improving governance, local service delivery, and administrative reach by reconfiguring existing district boundaries.
  • With increasing population density and localised challenges, smaller districts are seen as more responsive and manageable.
  • The proposal is expected to be swiftly processed, considering its emotional, political, and administrative appeal.

Legacy of Kalyan Singh

  • Kalyan Singh was a key leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Uttar Pradesh.
  • He played a central role in both governance and national politics during the Ram Janmabhoomi movement and was known for his strong administrative decisions.
  • He was elected multiple times from Atrauli and was revered as a people’s leader, especially among backward and marginalised communities.
  • His contributions went beyond politics—he laid the foundation for development-centric governance, including in education and rural infrastructure.
