Uttarakhand Plans ₹450 Crore Ropeway Between Rishikesh and Neelkanth Mahadev Temple
The state government of Uttarakhand will built the ropeway between Rishikesh and Neelkanth Mahadev Temple to cut the travel time for the devotees. The proposed project estimated around ₹450 crore aims it aims to reduce the current journey from almost three hours to just 15 minutes.

The proposed alignment will begin from the Tapovan area in Rishikesh and extend towards the revered Neelkanth Mahadev Temple which is a major pilgrimage destination dedicated to Lord Shiva.
As of now, the pilgrims have limited options. They either have to take a winding 30 km mountain road route which often becomes congested during the peak pilgrimage seasons or have to trek approximately 9 km through forest terrain.
Religious tourism contributes heavily to the Uttarakhand’s economy and this improved infrastructure often leads to increased visitor footfall.
The Neelkanth Mahadev Temple also attracts thousands of devotees annually and specially during Shravan month, Mahashivratri and other major Hindu festivals.

One of the most sensitive part of this project is its route passing through the ecologically important forest zones near the Rajaji Tiger Reserve and areas close to the Ganga river ecosystem.
Because of this the state authorities have reportedly integrated wildlife friendly safeguards into the project design.
Officials has also stated that the ropeway alignment has been planned carefully to minimize the ecological disruption.
The involvement of the National Board for Wildlife becomes specially important here, as the infrastructure projects near protected habitats require strict environmental scrutiny.
The Neelkanth Mahadev Temple is northern India’s one of the most significant Shiva shrines.
It is located at an altitude of around 1,330 metres and this temple is surrounded by dense forests and mountain landscapes.
According to Hindu belief, this is the sacred site where the Lord Shiva had consumed the poison that emerged during the Samudra Manthan, which causing his throat to turn blue earning him the name of the Neelkanth.
