World Bee Day 2026: Theme, Significance, History, and Why Bees Matter
On 20th May every year World Bee Day observes all around the world. This day being observes to raise the awareness about the crucial role of bees and other pollinators in maintaining food security, biodiversity and ecological balance. As the pollinators populations declining globally World Bee Day 2026 serves as the timely reminder to protecting the bees for the agriculture, livelihoods, and the planet’s future.
World Bee Day is observed to highlight the essential role of the bees and pollinators in the human survival and ecosystem health.

Also the special attention is also being given to women, youth and pastoral communities involved in beekeeping.
This date marks the birth anniversary of the Anton Janša, who was born on 20 May 1734 in Slovenia.
He is regarded as the pioneer of modern apiculture or scientific beekeeping.
Janša came from a beekeeping family, and his work significantly influenced the modern honey production and bee management practices.
The United Nations (UN) has selected this date to honor his contribution for the bees and environment.
The idea of the World Bee Day was proposed by the Slovenia.
The initiative received strong support from Apimondia which is the the International Federation of Beekeepers Associations.
In the year 2017, the United Nations General Assembly officially proclaimed the 20th May as World Bee Day.
The first official observance was took place in 2018.
Since then, it has become the major global awareness campaign for pollinator conservation.
Bees are the most important pollinators of the world.
They help to fertilize flowering plants, enables the crop production and plant reproduction.
