Ghaziabad, located in western Uttar Pradesh near Delhi, is a city rich in history and culture. Today, it is known as an important industrial and residential hub in the National Capital Region (NCR). But long before it became a modern city, Ghaziabad had a different identity. Its roots go back to the Mughal era, when it was founded and given an older name with deep historical significance.
The old name of Ghaziabad was Ghaziuddinnagar. This name was given in honor of Ghazi-ud-din Khan, a powerful Mughal nobleman. In 1740, he founded this settlement on the banks of the Hindon River and named it after himself. Over time, this name became widely known in the region.
Ghazi-ud-din Khan was a respected nawab (governor) during the reign of the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. He played an important role in both administration and military activities in Delhi and nearby regions. To strengthen his influence, he established a new township in the area, which was named Ghaziuddinnagar in his honor.
The name Ghaziabad came into use much later, during the time of railway expansion. When the railway station was constructed here, the original name “Ghaziuddinnagar” was shortened to Ghaziabad for convenience. Gradually, the new name became popular and is still used today.
For a long time, Ghaziabad was a part of Meerut district. On 14 November 1976, it was officially separated and declared as an independent district of Uttar Pradesh. Since then, the city has seen rapid industrial growth, better infrastructure, and educational development, making it one of the most important districts in the state.
Although Ghaziabad is now known as a fast-growing industrial hub, it is also a city of heritage and history. From its foundation in the Mughal period to its recognition as a modern district, the city has witnessed a journey of pride and progress. Today, it stands as a symbol of both historical legacy and modern development.
